Sample data for the Quick Tour self-paced learning module

by Tom Moore , November 26, 2025

The C5 sample dataset is based on a portion of the Crowsnest Pass forest in western Alberta. The Patchworks sample model based on this dataset incorporates a range of Patchworks features, and is a good dataset for demonstrations and learning. The self-paced learning in the Patchworks User Guide is based on this dataset. This article provides a link to download a version of this dataset that is required for the Quick Tour III exercise.

The dataset is contained in a ZIP file that can be downloaded by clicking on the link below. After downloading the file, use a decompression program to extract the contents and save the C5_2025_QuickTourIII folder to a convenient location on your workstation.

This folder contains the raw inputs that are used to prepare a Patchworks model: inventory, yield curves, definitions of silvicultural treatments and responeses, and road and mill locations. The Quick Tour III exercise in the Patchworks User Guide will step thrrough the process of building the additional datasets and configuration files that comprises a simple yet complete Patchworks model.

Permission has been given by the Alberta Ministry of Forestry and Parks to distribute this dataset under the following terms and conditions:
